Persuasion Room: Erinç Seymen
Galerist is proud to present the exhibition titled ‘Persuasion Room’, a collection of Erinç Seymen’s works consisting of paintings on canvas and paper as well as objects.
This exhibition is in effect a journal, which opens up to debate authoritarian psychological elements prevailing in the construction of convictions in terms of concepts such as leader cult, mental health, militarism, poverty and gender identity.
Playing with the associations of obedience, dedication and willingness on common social memory, Seymen aims to track down the remains of the direct/indirect pressure put on individual, made into a needy being, dependent on guidance in terms of his/her identities as a citizen, soldier, student, “patient” and worker. In ‘Persuasion Room’ ordinary images intersect with fairy elements, suggesting the necessity of constant doubt and discretion as an antidote against promises of health, prosperity and happiness given by the institutions such as schools, army, hospitals, factories, which shape up the human will that fluctuates between fascination & irritation and resistance & weakness, using the most creative and toughest methods.
Parallel to the diversity of materials in his work, the artist uses many forms of visual expression rather than strict stylism, building labor-intensive compositions woven with complex stories as well as plain and unexpected iconographic tricks.
Video performances of Seymen with Slovenian Duo son:DA in Istanbul and Maribor and the electro-acoustic sound composition he produced with musician Murat Balcı are also featured in this exhibition. Erinç Seymen’s 4th solo exhibition at Galerist can be visited between May 22nd and June 20th, 2009.
