Subject: Free: Leyla Gediz

Galerist, is proud to present most recent works by Leyla Gediz (b.1974, Istanbul), one of the leading figures of Turkish contemporary art. The exhibition titled “Subject: Free” can be seen at Galerist / Galatasaray from 21 January to 20 February, 2010. Borrowed from primary school art lessons, this verbal construct creates the opportunity for Gediz to put forward her most optimistic creations to date. Her new works are full of hope, imagination and humor, and they continue to explore a question that Gediz has asked since her first exhibition, which is: "are we able to build zones of liberty within the boundaries defined by others?" Gediz's new works, which may be seen within the tradition of still-life, focus on playful depiction and the ‘vocalization’ of inanimate objects. For “Subject: Free” she has worked with a vast variety of media that results in a complex exhibition of oil paintings, graphite drawings, epoxy sculptures, assemblages of ready-mades and sound installations.
