Press release
Galerist, is pleased present ‘I Can’t See You While You Sleep’ by Ali Emir Tapan at the project space in Asmalımescit. The artist will realize a performance on April 11th exposing the transformation of the soap sculptures. An experiment in self-destruction and the idea of rebirth utilizing urban elements, the exhibition will be on view between 11 – 21 April, 2014.
Instead of a conventional white cube space, Tapan occupies a bare location that is still under-construction to reflect the experimental and process-based essence of the piece. ‘I Can’t See You While You Sleep’ consists of three parts, which exist symbiotically: ‘The Dogs’, ‘The Chorus’ and ‘The Signal’. ‘The Dogs’ are sleeping sculptures of stray dogs made of soap. “The Chorus’ consists of painted electronic guitars and amplifiers producing feedback. The feedback from each guitar is arranged to give a note, all four notes producing the Tristan Chord. ‘The Signal’ is a light installation programmed to flash the message “I can’t see you while you sleep” in morse code to the outside world like a mantra repeated silently over and over again. the mantric rhythm is present in the “illuminated” sentence, interacting with ‘The Chorus’ synesthesically. Ali Emir Tapan’s work is a reenactment physical world transforming into a mystical and poetic state.
