Reborn: Halil Vurucuoğlu
Galerist hosts Halil Vurucoğlu’s sixth solo exhibition titled “Reborn” between April 7 and May 7, 2016. Inspired by Carl Gustav Jung’s rebirth archetype, the exhibition seeks answers to the questions of “what” and “how” through an examination of the individual’s inner world by separating the mysterious layers of the subconscious into representative images and symbols.
Playing with the viewer’s spatial perception, Vurucuoğlu reanimates the subconscious in different forms by exploring the hidden realities behind what’s visible: psychological expressions, intrinsic contradictions between the heart and the mind as well as the cause and effect relationships. As a result of this intensive intellectual process, he reaches a complex set of emotions that he seeks to manifest through nature, the very origin of our existence.
Vurucuoğlu’s work examines the fluctuations between substance, meaning, mind and emotions in an endeavor to understand what shapes human behavior. The artist transforms the multi-layered, watercolor and cut-out images of the mountains, the sea and the sky into multi-dimensional expressions, symbolizing the male and female substructures of the subconscious.
The installation Reborn, which gives the exhibition its title, presents what Vurucuoğlu wants to understand and convey about the subconscious through the cave metaphor. The subconscious is not a dark corner at some part of the brain, but an endless energy zone. According to Jung, the cave represents the most primal form of the subconscious, secure and removed from external factors. Based on this idea, the artist reinterprets the cave image, which he associates with the vagina as a metaphor and transforms into a three dimensional installation. He thus invites the audience to an unusual journey where they can physically move through the different layers of the subconscious. While the changing light, shadows and sounds provide an opportunity to explore the image from different perspectives, they also boldly disclose what is hidden and secure.
