What You Want: Elif Uras
Between the dates of the 9th of December and the 8th of January 2005, Galerist will be hosting the first solo exhibition of Elif Uras in Turkey: “ What You Want”.
Uras’s paintings that present a portrayal of everyday life are inspired from the visual culture of present day that is inbred in “want”, “performance” and “apperance”. By using striking and blinding colours, atmospheric effects, differing styles and methods, Uras aspires to display the qualities of paint she uses. Landscapes and interior spaces, and the perspective that exceeds ordinary perception may in some of Uras’s works be purposefully distorted. At first glance, her works resemble a world where boundaries of the romantic are challenged to the extremes. At second take, however, the images start to become recognizable, communicating the artists observations on human nature, reflecting the naivity and weakness of human nature and their mortal being.
Born in 1972 in Ankara, Elif Uras received her undergraduate degree in “economics and international relations” from Brown University, and continued her studies at the Columbia University Law School. Between the years of 1998-2003, Uras received her Fine Arts undergraduate and graduate degrees from New York University, and New York School of Visual Arts respectively. In 2001, recognizing her merit in fine arts she received “The Rhodes Family” award. The artist who has displayed her works in many group shows in New York presented her first solo show at the Kenny Schachter/ROVE gallery in the May/June of this year. Uras exhibited her Works to the Turkish audience for the first time in September with the group show “Organized Conflict” at Proje4L curated by Fulya Erdemci.
