Herod, ruler of Judaea, marries his brother's wife, and becomes increasingly obssesed with his stepdaughter, Salome. When she meets Jokanaan, and imprioned prophet, Salome is entranced. After he rejects her, she demands his head. Salome dances for Herod and despite his horror he fulfills Salome's wish and then orders her death.
